How many days will your habit take?
A personalized estimate based on habit type, complexity, frequency, and time of day. Uses the Lally et al. (2010) and Singh et al. (2024) peer-reviewed data covering 2,601 people.

How this estimate is calculated
Base range by habit type
Each habit category has an empirically grounded base range. Hygiene habits start at 18-66 days (fastest, including flossing SMD=1.11 in Singh 2024). Exercise starts at 30-150 days (slowest category).
Complexity multiplier
Simple one-step habits with a stable context automate ~20% faster. Complex multi-step habits with variable contexts take ~35% longer. Supported by Lally et al. (2010).
Frequency multiplier
Daily practice accelerates formation by ~15% compared to a 5-6 day schedule. Practicing 3-4 days per week adds ~30% to the estimated range. From Lally et al. (2010).
Time of day
Morning habits form ~15% faster than afternoon. Evening habits take ~20% longer on average. Time of day is a significant moderator in the Singh et al. (2024) meta-analysis.
All estimates are clamped to the empirical range of 18-254 days observed in Lally et al. (2010). Individual results vary. This tool outputs population medians, not individual guarantees. Full science report
